  How Self-Directed Are You?

Consider the following aspects of SDL. Rate yourself on a scale from 1, “Not self-directed at all,” to 10, “Very self-directed.”

Remember: this is not a test. There are no right answers. This is a personal survey for your eyes only, and for your use in deciding how to become more self-directed. Make your response useful by being as clear and accurate as you can.

The item on the left describes “1” - Not self-directed; the item on the right describes “10” - Very self-directed. Circle the number that most accurately rates where you stand on the scale.

What Do I Do With My Results?

The answers you have given are only meaningful to you, but they can be very meaningful. First of all, they introduce the main themes that will be developed in the sessions ahead.
If you look them over you will get an idea of what is involved in becoming skillfully self-directed.

You can also learn a lot about your status as a self-directed learner. First, items that you have ranked from 6 to 10 identify strengths that will help you become more self-directed. Items that you rated lower—from 1 to 5—are the aspects that most need work. Look the low-rated items over. See if any patterns emerge. What do they tell you?

I urge you also to begin improving your performance on your own. You can improve any of these skills on your own right now. The features of self-directed learning are such natural aspects of successful performance you will recognize them right away. You will say, “Yes, of course. How could I forget that!” You can also figure out how to improve. So select one, two, or three items and go to work on them. I will get to them all here eventually, but you don’t need to wait.

In this program, our goal is to have thirty 10s on the survey—full self-direction when we need it. The survey you just did is your baseline. Every so often—after we do a few of these units--I will ask you to take the survey again and compare your ratings to see how much you improved, so you may want to keep the survey you just did . In self-direction evaluation is usually self-evaluation for improvement.

Finally, a little self-check. How are you doing? Is everything clear? Do you see where we are going? Are you ready to dig in? Have you already dug in? I hope so.
